"The reasons people are afraid to visit a dentist can be too numerous to list, but I had each of them. For years and years I would try to take care of any dental issues myself or when it became necessary and I had to see a dentist, I would just have them pull the tooth because it was the quickest way out of their office.
Consequently, my dental issues were many by the time I found it necessary to find a dentist. My fears had not eased over the years but instead had become greater. I had heard of sedation dentistry and decided to look on the internet to see if there was such a dentist in close proximity to me. I found several out there, but while checking out the web pages I saw the testimonial letters regarding Dr. Elizabeth Rushin. She seemed too good to be true.
Curiosity got the better of me, and I thought it wouldn’t hurt to gibe her office a call. I was hoping someone would be rude to me so I could scratch that one off my list. No such luck! I called and talked to Shari, who made arrangements for me to come in for a consultation. What had I done? I had a dental appointment! Would I show up????
I did. Not without a great deal of talking to myself, calling myself a coward, realizing the pain in my mouth was not going away on it’s own this time.
I showed up for my appointment and met Carol and Dr. Rushin. The doctor did an examination and found I had an infected and impacted tooth, lots of gum disease, and several other teeth that were in bad shape from the years of neglect. They needed x-rays to determine what course of action we should take. I have always had difficulty with mouth x-rays-they lead to other work. But Carol was so gentle and caring with the procedure, I hardly knew what was happening until it was over. I had lived through a dental appointment! But this was just the beginning.
I got a prescription to get rid of my infection, another to relieve the pain, and a return appointment so that they could let me know what the doctor’s recommendation was after reviewing the x-rays.
When I returned, Shari took me to a room and showed me my x-rays and gave me the options that Dr. Rushin had suggested. None sounded very good to me. But something had to be done. I opted for the extreme, because it would have been my ultimate choice in the end, at any rate. They had to pull all my teeth and I had to get dentures.
I was going to experience sedation dentistry first hand. I had lots of questions regarding the procedures, the aftermath, the financial issues, and the always present fear. Shari took the time to address each of my questions and went to the doctor for any she didn’t already know. I made the appointment.
On the day of my procedure, my son drove me to the office early in the morning. I had already taken the pill they had given me. I was sure this wasn’t going to work since felt fine—not a bit sleepy, wide awake and aware of everything going on around me. They took me tin the back and carol gave me two more pills. We talked for about 2 minutes, then I remember nothing until I wake up at home hours later. I don’t remember leaving the office, my son driving me home, or what may have happened all afternoon.
Since then, I have been back to the office several times. New dentures require a lot of adjusting. That’s when I met K.P. She works her magic on the dentures. She can also make you feel like there is hope when you get down. It is a big adjustment to get used to, but her smiling face and positive outlook can always make you look to the bright side.
If you are in need of a dentist, but not going because of fears or anxiety, let me put your mind at ease. You can do it, with the help of these people. They understand where you’re at and how to get you moving forward. It has been one of the most positive experiences of my life and I wish I had found them earlier.
